Dosage and administration
The dose of Deflox is determined according to the type of infection, severity, sensitivity of the pathogen and age, weight, and effectiveness of kidney of the patients.
Adult: Normal adult dose: 250-750 mg twice daily.
For the treatment of gonorrhea 250 mg is used as a single dose.
Depending on the severity of urinary tract infection the dose is 250-500 mg twice daily.
Depending on the severity of respiratory tract infection the dose is 250-750 mg twice daily.
Cystic fibrosis: In pseudomonal infection of the lower tract, the normal dose is 750 mg twice daily.
In the majority of infection, 250-500 mg twice daily should be administered. In severe infections, particularly due to Pseudomonas, Staphylococci and Streptococci, the higher dosage 750 mg twice daily should be used.
Impaired renal function: Dosage adjustments are required in patients with severe renal impairment (serum creatinine > 256 micromole/liter or creatinine clearance < 20 ml/min.) Adjustment is achieved by reducing the total daily dose by half, although monitoring of drug serum levels provides the most reliable basis for dose adjustment.
Elderly: Although higher Ciprofloxacin serum levels are found in the elderly, no adjustment of dosage is necessary.
Child: Children and adolescents (1-17 years): 10-30 mg/kg/day twice daily.
Duration of treatment: For acute infections the usual treatment period is 5 to 10 days with Ciprofloxacin. Generally treatment should be continued for at least 3 days after the sign and symptoms of the infection have been disappeared.

Side-effects of Deflox include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, head-ache, dizziness, rash, itching, fatigue, pain of joints, mild light sensitivity, crystalurea, temporary disturbance of liver enzymes and myalgia etc.

It should be used with caution in patients with suspected or known CNS disorders such as arteriosclerosis or epilepsy or other factors which predispose to seizures and convulsions. The patients taking Deflox should drink a large quantity of water or other liquid to prevent excess alkalinity in urine.
Drug interaction
Magnesium Hydroxide or Aluminum Hydroxide containing antacids decrease the absorption of Ciprofloxacin. The use of Ciprofloxacin with Theophylline may increase the plasma concentration of Theophylline.
Use in pregnancy and lactation
There is no adequate and well-controlled study in pregnant women. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in human breast milk.
